Sameer Rao is a Baltimore-based journalist and media professional whose work primarily focuses on business, technology, politics, arts, culture and racial and social justice issues.
Sameer was most recently the lead editor of The Daily Record, Maryland’s premier publication for legal, legislative and business news. Before then, he spent almost four years with Technical.ly, where he oversaw and contributed to reporting on the tech economy in Maryland, D.C. and Virginia. He was previously a reporter for legal world publication Law360 and its mid-law-focused sister site, Law360 Pulse. Sameer was Law360 Pulse’s Connecticut wire reporter and also contributed to the main Law360 site’s access to justice and legal industry coverage. Before joining Law360 and pivoting to business journalism, Sameer was an arts and entertainment reporter for The Baltimore Sun. He previously spent nearly four years as a reporter for Colorlines, where he composed long- and short-form pieces on arts, music, communications policy, tech, sports, police violence, immigration and a variety of other topics. Sameer’s freelance work includes stories for The Guardian, Stereogum, VICE’s Noisey, The Village Voice, Kore Magazine, WXPN’s The Key and The Washington Post Express, among other publications.
Sameer’s journalism career began with an internship at Philadelphia City Paper, where he also freelanced and oversaw a hyperlocal section before its 2015 closure. He is a member of the Asian American Journalists Association (AAJA), having served on its national governing and advisory boards, worked on its editorial guidance for newsrooms and co-chaired its 2017 national convention in Philadelphia. He also successfully completed The Power of Diverse Voices, a seminar for journalists of color, at The Poynter Institute that same year.
Sameer is a graduate of Haverford College and Bryn Mawr Graduate School of Social Work and Social Research, and he has also worked as a marketing and communications manager, case worker and community organizer.
